AMH reflects hormones produced by small ovarian follicles. A lower result may indicate a smaller recruitable follicle pool and a potentially lower egg yield during stimulation. It does not directly measure egg quality and cannot, by itself, predict natural pregnancy.

Interpretation depends on age, units, the laboratory method and clinical context. Hormonal contraception, recent ovarian surgery and other factors may also be relevant. A repeat test is not automatically necessary; an ultrasound may add more useful information.

A focused review usually covers your cycle pattern, pregnancy goals, previous pregnancies or treatment, pelvic surgery, endometriosis, family history and medicines. An antral follicle count can help assess visible follicles, while other tests are chosen only if they answer a specific question.

If you are trying with a partner, semen and tubal factors may be just as important. Treating the AMH number alone can miss the actual reason pregnancy has not occurred.

Depending on your circumstances, the recommendation may be to continue trying with a defined review point, complete additional evaluation, discuss IVF, or consider egg freezing if you are not ready to try. Low AMH does not mean the same plan is right for everyone.

If stimulation is considered, counselling should cover the possibility of a lower response and whether more than one cycle might be discussed. No supplement or procedure can guarantee restoration of the ovarian reserve or a specific egg number.

Age remains a major influence on egg quality, while AMH is more closely related to quantity and stimulation response. That may make timely planning useful, but pressure should not replace informed consent.

Ask the specialist which decision is time-sensitive, what can reasonably wait and what evidence supports each option. A clear plan may include a follow-up date rather than immediate treatment.
