What is Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD)?

Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) is an advanced test performed during IVF to detect specific inherited genetic disorders in embryos before they are transferred to the uterus. This screening allows only unaffected embryos to be selected for transfer, reducing the risk of passing on genetic diseases.

At EPIA, PGD is integrated into IVF treatment plans for individuals or couples with a known risk of inherited conditions. Whether due to a family history, recurrent miscarriage, or a previous child affected by genetic disease, PGD helps ensure a safer and more informed pathway to pregnancy.

Who is PGD For?

  • Couples who are carriers of genetic conditions such as thalassemia, cystic fibrosis, Tay-Sachs disease, or sickle cell anemia
  • Individuals with a strong family history of inherited disorders
  • Couples who have experienced repeated pregnancy loss due to chromosomal abnormalities
  • Individuals planning IVF who want to reduce the risk of transmitting hereditary conditions

The EPIA Difference

Why Choose EPIA for Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis?

  • PGD performed by experienced embryologists in a precision-controlled lab environment
  • Genetic reports reviewed by fertility specialists and genetic counsellors
  • Embryo selection tailored to minimise inherited disease risk
  • Seamless integration with IVF and ICSI cycles at EPIA
  • Transparent discussion of benefits, limitations, and next steps before treatment begins

Transformation

What is the PGD Process?

  • Step 1: IVF and Embryo Creation - You’ll begin a standard IVF cycle, which includes ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, and fertilisation to create embryos.
  • Step 2: Embryo Biopsy - On Day 5 or 6 of development, a few cells are gently removed from each embryo. This does not harm the embryo and is done by trained embryologists using micromanipulation techniques.
  • Step 3: Genetic Testing - The cells are sent to a specialised genetic lab to test for specific inherited disorders. Each test is customised based on your medical and genetic background.
  • Step 4: Embryo Selection and Transfer - Only embryos free from the targeted condition are selected for transfer. These embryos are usually frozen while results are awaited, and transferred in a future cycle.

What is the difference between PGD and PGT?

PGT stands for Preimplantation Genetic Testing. PGD, or Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis, is one type of PGT focused on detecting specific inherited diseases. PGT-A screens for chromosomal abnormalities, and PGT-M tests for single-gene conditions.

Who should consider PGD?

PGD is ideal for couples who are known carriers of genetic disorders, those with affected children, or anyone with a strong family history of inherited diseases.

How is PGD done?

It’s done as part of an IVF cycle. After embryos are created, a few cells are biopsied and tested for the targeted condition. Only unaffected embryos are used for transfer.

Will this delay my embryo transfer?

Yes. Embryos are frozen after biopsy while results are processed. The actual embryo transfer is done in a later cycle after analysis is complete.

Does PGD improve IVF success?

Yes, especially for high-risk cases. By selecting embryos that are genetically normal for the tested condition, PGD can reduce miscarriage risk and improve the chance of a healthy pregnancy.

Is PGD testing accurate?

PGD is highly accurate for the specific conditions being tested, though no test is 100 percent. All results are reviewed and explained in detail.
